The XBee Shield features a DPDT switch that connects the serial pins (DIN and DOUT) of the XBee to either the UART pins (D0, D1) or any digital pins on the Arduino (D2 and D3 by default). It draws power from the Arduino's 5V pin, which is then regulated on-board to 3.3VDC for the XBee. The shield also handles level shifting for the DIN and DOUT pins of the XBee, with the latest revision using a robust MOSFET level shifter in place of a diode level shifter.
With the SparkFun XBee Shield, you can easily monitor your project's activity thanks to LEDs that indicate power, activity on DIN, DOUT, RSSI, and DIO5 pins of the XBee. The Arduino's reset button is also conveniently located on the shield. For prototyping, a 9x11 grid of 2.54mm spaced holes is available. Please note that the shield does not come with headers installed or an XBee module included.
