Infrared (IR) break-beam sensors offer a straightforward solution for motion detection. Utilizing an emitter that projects a beam of invisible IR light to a receiver, these sensors provide precise control over motion detection areas. When an object interrupts the beam, the sensor signals the event, making it faster than PIR sensors and more economical than Sonar modules.
The 3mm IR version operates efficiently up to 25cm (10 inches). It is versatile, working well with both 3.3V and 5V power supplies, although 5V is recommended for optimal range. The open collector transistor output requires a pull-up resistor for digital signal reading. Most microcontrollers support an internal pull-up resistor, but if not, you can connect a 10K resistor between the white and red wires.
This version includes premium wire ends for effortless integration with breadboards, and they can be trimmed if not needed. Accommodating 100mA current sinkage, it's perfect for controlling relays, LEDs, and more. For projects needing extended range, a 5mm version is also available.
