Relive the era when storage was measured in kilobytes with the Adafruit Floppy FeatherWing. This unique accessory seamlessly interfaces with 34-Pin IDC Connector floppy drives from classic PCs. Designed for 3.5" and 5.25" disks, it excels in reading and writing tasks.
The FeatherWing supports fast microcontrollers like the Feather M4 or Feather RP2040, ensuring efficient data processing. With built-in level shifting and a ready-to-plug connector, it converts raw bit transitions into data, making it ideal for retro computing projects.
A small boost converter powers 5V logic levels, while incoming signals are safely downshifted to 3.3V. An external 5V power supply is needed for drive operation to accommodate motors that demand more than USB power provides. Software supports greaseweazle and fluxengine for data archiving and format interpretation.
With capabilities for FAT-formatted disk operations via Arduino, CircuitPython, or a computer, it's perfect for retro projects, offering write protection with a built-in switch. The FeatherWing includes a 2x17 header with level shifting circuitry. Prepare by soldering pin headers, attaching a compatible Feather, finding a floppy drive and disks, and arranging proper power supplies for successful operation.
