Description

The very-low-dropout L4931 regulator from ST is an effective solution for converting 4-20V sources into a stable 3.3V output with 2% regulation. This device, ideal for a wide range of electronics, ensures efficient energy conversion.

Encased in a TO-92 package, it offers a 250mA current capability featuring internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protection. The L4931 exhibits a low 0.4V linear dropout, surpassing the typical 780X series' 2V dropout, making it highly suitable for lithium polymer/ion batteries or 5V power supplies.

With a quiescent current draw of 1mA that ups to 5mA at maximum current, it is optimized for battery-powered devices. The regulator's heat dissipation can reach 0.6W without a heatsink, provided input voltage and output current are managed carefully.

Essential for its stability are 2.2uF electrolytic capacitors on its input and output; using 10uF capacitors ensures enhanced performance. For thermal management, use a calculator to determine your heat sink requirements, considering the thermal resistance of 200°C/Watt junction-to-air. Maintain an output current below 0.1A or use a 5V input to prevent overheating and ensure optimal operation.
