With the SparkFun Arduino ProtoShield, there's no need to purchase a full kit when all you need is a prototyping board that fits your Arduino. However, you may find a stackable header kit useful, which can be found in related products.
The standout feature of this ProtoShield is its solderable-like breadboard prototyping area. Half of this area is designed with a breadboard in mind, with open jumper pads between each through hole on the underside of the shield. This facilitates breadboard-like connections - simply add a component and solder a jumper between holes to make a connection. The other side of the board, near the BlueSMiRF and Serial UART ports, retains standard prototyping pads.
SparkFun has thoughtfully moved the prototype testing components off the main shield area and onto a removable, ProtoSnap styled PCB. This test area provides soldering spaces for two 3mm LEDs, two 330 Ohm resistors, a 10K Ohm resistor, and a pushbutton. Please note, these components are not included and must be purchased separately.
