Paxcounter is an ESP32 MCU based device for measuring passenger flows in real time. It counts how many mobile devices are nearby. This gives an estimate of how many people are in the area. Paxcounter detects WiFi and bluetooth signals in the sky and targets mobile devices by analyzing the MAC addresses.
The intention of this project is to do this without encroaching on privacy: you don't have to track people-owned devices if you just want to count them. Therefore, Paxcounter does not continuously store MAC addresses or perform fingerprints on the scanned devices.
Data can be stored on a local SD card, transferred to the cloud using the LoRaWAN network or MQTT over TCP / IP, or sent to a local host using a serial (SPI) interface.
You can build this project on batteries using the ESP32 deep sleep mode and achieve long uptime with a single 18650 Li-Ion cell.
