What sets this kit apart is the simplicity of its sensors. They do not contain active electronics. Instead, they function using sealed magnetic reed switches and magnets. This means you will need to provide a voltage source for measurements. However, the upside is that the sensors are straightforward to interpret.
The rainfall sensor is a self-emptying bucket-type rain gauge. It activates a momentary button closure for each 0.2794mm of collected rain. The anemometer, or wind speed meter, encodes wind speed by closing a switch with each rotation. A wind speed of 2.4km/h results in a switch closure once per second. The wind vane, or direction indicator, reports wind direction as a voltage produced by the combination of resistors inside the sensor. The vane's magnet can potentially close two switches at once, indicating up to 16 different positions, although 8 positions are more realistically achievable.
All sensors in this kit come with RJ11 terminated cables. For information on the pin-out of the cable, refer to the datasheet provided.
The Sparkfun Weather Meter Kit does require some basic assembly. However, it comes with a comprehensive assembly guide to help you get started.
