Adafruit USB + Serial Backpack Kit with 16x2 RGB backlight positive LCD

Adding a character display to your project or computer has never been easier with the new Adafruit USB or TTL serial backpack!

This custom-designed PCB sits snugly on the back of our 'standard' character LCD (16x2 or 20x4 sized) and fulfills every command you might need: from printing text and automatic scrolling to setting the backlight and adjusting contrast. Personalize it further by making custom characters or toggling the cursor visibility.

Experience color versatility with our RGB backlight LCDs, offering full 8-bit PWM control. Tailor the background to your mood with colors like red, green, blue, pink, and more.

Inside, the USB-capable AT90USB162 chip efficiently listens for commands from both a USB type C port and a TTL serial input wire. The flexible USB interface appears as a COM/serial port across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms, automatically selecting data from the active input. While the USB connection runs at any baud rate, the TTL connection defaults to 9600, adjustable across multiple preset rates (2400 to 57600 baud), prominently flashing the baud rate on the LCD during powerup.

All customizations—be it baud rate, backlight color, brightness, or splash screen—are stored permanently in EEPROM. Enjoy seamless compatibility with computer applications or libraries expecting a "Matrix Orbital" LCD, such as "LCD Smartie," thanks to a command interface consistent with popular specifications. Additional commands for RGB backlight control and LCD size setting enhance usability.

For immediate usage, simply send ASCII to the LCD, and watch it appear as typed. This mini-kit includes the Adafruit USB+Serial LCD backpack, a single 16x2 RGB positive backlight LCD, and a strip of header. The LCD is easily attachable with soldering, accompanied by a comprehensive tutorial with diagrams and testing instructions.
