SparkFun ToF Range Finder Sensor - VL6180

The SparkFun "Time-of-Flight" (ToF) Range Finder is an innovative sensor board equipped with the VL6180 distance sensor. Unlike most distance sensors which operate based on reflected light intensity or angles, the VL6180 uses a precise clock to measure the time it takes for light to bounce back from a surface. This makes it more accurate and immune to noise. This is the same technology used by cellphones to detect when they are held to the ear.

The VL6180 is a 3-in-1 package from STMicroelectronics that combines an IR emitter, a range sensor, and an ambient light sensor. It comes with an I²C interface for easy communication. The ToF Range Finder is similar to its breakout cousin, but with a few key differences. It features an on-board 2.8V regulator, which ensures any voltage higher than 2.8V is shifted down, preventing damage to the board. Its form factor allows it to be a near drop-in replacement for most Sharp sensors, making it ideal for small robotics platforms.

Although the datasheet states the VL6180 can measure an absolute range of up to 10cm, it has been successfully tested up to 25cm. This makes it a versatile choice for various applications.
