The LuMini LED Ring is powered and controlled via a few solder pads on the back of each board. These pads include 5V and ground, a set of pads for data and clock input, and another set for data and clock output. The ring behaves like a string of LEDs, with multiple numbers silked onto the back of the board that correspond to the LED number. The LuMini LED Ring also features four detachable mounting points (two inside the ring and two outside) that can be used to secure your ring to a surface/project or be broken off to create more complex designs.
For larger installations, it may be necessary to add a decoupling capacitor between power and ground to prevent voltage dips when turning on multiple LEDs simultaneously. It is recommended to use a 4.7µF capacitor, available in strips of 10.
Features of the SparkFun LuMini LED Ring include a 2.54cm diameter, 20x APA102-2020 LEDs, four detachable mounting points, optional capacitor space, and daisy-chainable design.
Documentation available for the LuMini LED Ring includes a schematic, Eagle files, a hookup guide, information about LEDs, a datasheet (APA102-2020), SMD soldering tips and tricks, the FastLED library, example code, and GitHub resources.
