The DotStar LED strips offer a significant upgrade in performance over traditional NeoPixels. Featuring generic 2-wire SPI for faster data transmission and ease of use, they eliminate the need for specific timing protocols.
Each 5050-sized LED contains an embedded microcontroller, providing seamless 24-bit color control and reduced flickering with a high 20 KHz PWM refresh rate. This allows for superior Persistence-of-Vision effects, ensuring smooth color transitions even at low brightness levels.
Designed for flexible use, DotStar strips can be easily controlled by numerous microcontrollers, from Arduino to Raspberry Pi, thanks to compatibility with a wide range of processors and support for hardware SPI, albeit not required.
Available in multiple densities (30, 60, and 144 LEDs per meter) and with weatherproof sheathing, these strips are sold by the meter and can be cut or extended as needed. They require a 5V DC power supply with a maximum voltage threshold of 6V to ensure safety. The strips are provided in 5-meter reels with a 4-pin JST SM connector at each end.
The flexible PCBs, coupled with simple soldering requirements and the availability of tutorial resources, make these LED strips versatile and adaptable for a range of lighting projects.
