The SIK comes with an online guide that provides step-by-step instructions, circuit diagrams, and hookup tables for each project and circuit. Full example code is provided along with explanations of new concepts and components as they are introduced. The guide also offers troubleshooting tips for any challenges encountered along the way.
One of the key advantages of the SIK is that it doesn't require any soldering, making it suitable for beginners aged 10 and up. The SIK v4.1 offers a new approach to teaching embedded electronics, introducing components in the context of the circuit being built. Each circuit builds on the previous one, leading to a comprehensive project that incorporates all the components and concepts introduced throughout the guide. This means that even if you've used the SIK before, the v4.1 version offers a brand-new experience.
The SIK v4.1 replaces the SparkFun RedBoard Qwiic with the Arduino Uno (SMD version) and does not include the SIK guidebook and carrying case. This change has reduced the overall size and weight of the kit, making shipping cheaper and easier for international customers. Please note, this SIK does not include a carrying case or print guidebook.
The SIK v4.1 includes a range of components such as an Arduino Uno, a breadboard holder, a solderless breadboard, a mini screwdriver, a 16x2 white-on-black LCD, a motor driver, a pair of rubber wheels, a pair of hobby gearmotors, a small servo, an ultrasonic sensor, a TMP36 temp sensor, a 1.83m SparkFun USB cable, jumper wires, a photocell, a tricolor LED, red, blue, yellow and green LEDs, red, blue, yellow and green tactile buttons, a 10K Trimpot, a mini power switch, a piezo speaker, a AA battery holder, 330 and 10K resistors, a binder clip, and a Dual Lock™ Fastener.
Helpful resources are available such as the SIK Printed Guide Flipbook, the SIK Printed Guide (PDF, Download File: 31.9MB), the SIK Guide Errata (v4.1), the Online Experiment Guide, and the SIK Info Page.
Project examples include Light (blinking an LED, potentiometer, photoresistor, RGB night-light), Sound (buzzer, digital trumpet, "Simon Says" game), Motion (servo motors, distance sensor, motion alarm), Display (LCD "Hello, World!", temperature sensor, "DIY Who Am I?" game), and Robot (motor basics, remote-controlled robot, autonomous robot).
