PIR Motion Sensor (JST)

The PIR Motion Sensor (JST) is a user-friendly device that is designed to detect movement in a room. Once powered, it takes a snapshot of the room within 1-2 seconds. If any movement is detected after this period, the 'alarm' pin will go low, alerting you to the presence of motion.

The device operates effectively within a voltage range of 5 to 12V, with a datasheet indicating optimal performance at 12V. However, if required, a jumper wire can be installed past the 5V regulator on board, allowing the unit to operate at 3.3V. The sensor consumes 1.6mA@3.3V.

The 'alarm' pin of the sensor functions as an open collector, necessitating a pull-up resistor. This open drain configuration permits the connection of multiple motion sensors to a single input pin. If any sensor is triggered, the input pin will be pulled low.

Sparkfun has made significant improvements to the connector of the PIR Motion Sensor. The previous "odd" connector has been replaced with a more common 3-pin JST, enhancing the accessibility of the sensor for diverse project requirements. The new connector features red for power, white for ground and black for alarm.
