MicroMod employs the widely-used M.2 connector, the same type found in modern motherboards and laptops. The M.2 connector features various plastic 'keys' to prevent the insertion of incompatible devices. The MicroMod standard specifically uses the 'E' key and modifies the M.2 standard by relocating the mounting screw 4mm to the side. This ensures that while an M.2 compatible WiFi module might fit into the connector, it cannot be secured if it is not compatible with the MicroMod carrier board.

The MicroMod ecosystem is a modular interface system that allows a microcontroller “processor board” to connect with various “carrier board” peripherals. With the M.2 standard, MicroMod enables easy swapping of processors to match the requirements of different projects.
