Calliope Mini Development Board

The Calliope Mini, developed in Germany, is a versatile, star-shaped development board, making it an excellent tool for educational purposes. It shares its core with the micro:bit, featuring the same Nordic nRF51822 multi-protocol Bluetooth 4.0, a 32-bit ARM Cortex M0 processor operating at 16MHz, and 16kB RAM. Its 256kB of Flash allows for an impressive amount of programming flexibility. Additionally, users benefit from a 5x5 LED matrix display, USB micro B connection, and a JST battery connector, supporting a wide range of educational applications.

Beyond these shared features, Calliope Mini stands out with significant upgrades. The unique star design incorporates alligator pads on six corners, making connections simpler and more secure. A full 9 degrees of freedom IMU, including an accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, allows for complex motion and orientation detection. Adding to its audio capabilities is a MEMS microphone, which enhances projects by enabling sound input. Meanwhile, a built-in piezo speaker and vibrant RGB LED expand its output options, providing auditory and visual feedback.

The Calliope Mini also features a DC motor driver, which can power a single DC motor or solenoid, opening up new mechanical possibilities. Two Grove connectors offer further expandability with both I2C and serial or analog connections. In essence, the Calliope Mini marries creativity with technology, making it a particularly engaging tool for projects requiring enhanced sensory inputs and outputs.
