The MIDI Shield from SparkFun is equipped with an opto-isolated MIDI-IN port and a MIDI-OUT port. It can be directly mounted on an Arduino, connecting the MIDI-IN to the Arduino's hardware RX pin and the MIDI-OUT to TX. The shield also includes two potentiometers connected to analog pins 1 and 2, which can be utilized to control various parameters such as volume, pitch, and tone. Moreover, the shield is fitted with three momentary push buttons, a reset button, and green and red stat LEDs. A RUN/PROG switch is also provided for programming the Arduino over serial without needing to remove the shield.
The SparkFun MIDI Shield has been updated with several configurable features. These include the ability to convert the MIDI output to a MIDI thru, and the option to use a software serial port for MIDI. This leaves the hardware serial free for programming and debugging. The shield also buffers the output, ensuring compatibility with the Arduino Pro without the need to bypass the protection resistors on the serial TX and RX lines.
Please note: The MIDI Shield does not come with all parts soldered on. Two MIDI connectors, two trim pots, and three push buttons are included with the product and will need to be attached by the end user.
