ZX Distance and Gesture Sensor

The ZX Distance and Gesture Sensor is a revolutionary touchless sensor that recognizes simple gestures and the distance of an object from the sensor. The sensor, created in partnership with XYZ Interactive, uses their GestureSense® technology to identify the distance of an object up to about 30cm (Z axis) and the location of the object from side to side across the sensor in a 15cm span (X axis). The sensor can communicate with a microcontroller or computer via I²C or UART.

The sensor operates by bouncing infrared light from the two LEDs on either side off an object above the sensor. The light then returns to the receiver in the centre of the sensor, and the data is interpreted by a microcontroller on the back of the sensor. This allows you to easily determine both the Z axis and the X axis of an object. The sensor can also detect simple gestures. The pin outs on the board are clearly labelled, and it is indicated whether they are needed in I²C or UART communication.
