SparkFun Qwiic PIR - 1uA (EKMB1107112)

The SparkFun EKMB1107112 Qwiic PIR is a highly effective Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor that excels in detecting motion within a small area. It utilizes an EKM-series PIR sensor from Panasonic^® and an ATTiny84 for I²C interaction with the Qwiic system. This sensor is perfect for applications that need to detect small movements, as it is optimized for battery-powered applications due to its low standby current draw of 1µA.

The SparkFun EKMB1107112 Qwiic PIR doesn't provide specific distance data. Instead, it monitors for IR light from objects within its field of view, activating its signal when motion is detected. This makes it ideal for applications such as automatic device activation upon motion detection. It can be used in home and building automation for energy saving, automated on/off lighting control, security, appliances, and IoT.

This PIR sensor from Panasonic^® is low-profile, offering space savings for constrained designs with its 10.9mm height compared to the standard 14.4mm. It includes a lens for creating various detection zones, an optical filter to block non-infrared light, pyroelectric sensing elements, electromagnetic shielding for all circuitry, and an impedance converter to get an electrical signal. It provides a digital output across 32 zones with a detection distance of 5m and a 90° x 90° detection area.

Note that the sensitivity of passive infrared sensors is influenced by environmental conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to perform a performance evaluation test under representative conditions.

The SparkFun Qwiic Connect System is a comprehensive ecosystem of I²C sensors, actuators, shields, and cables that accelerate prototyping and minimize errors. All Qwiic-enabled boards use a common 1mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector. This not only reduces the amount of required PCB space, but also ensures polarized connections, preventing incorrect hook-ups.

The SparkFun EKMB1107112 Qwiic PIR comes with a default I²C address of 0x12, with an alternate address of 0x13 selectable by a solder jumper. It includes 2x Qwiic connectors and a 2x3 header on the back of the board for reprogramming the ATTiny84. The lens diameter is 10.4mm, and the lens height is 10.9mm. The sensor has a 1µA standby current consumption, a 5m detection distance, and a 90° x 90° (±45°) detection area.
