SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog

Description Links Attachments

The SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog is a superior version of the highly popular OpenLog, but with a transition from the original serial-based interface to I2C. It boasts Qwiic connectors, allowing you to daisy chain multiple I2C devices and log them all without occupying your serial port. It can store a large amount of serial data, acting as a black box for your project's data for scientific or debugging purposes. It connects to your system without any need for soldering, thanks to the Qwiic system. However, for those who prefer using a breadboard, it does come with 2.54mm-spaced pins.

The SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog operates on an onboard ATmega328, running at 16MHz due to the onboard resonator. It features the Optiboot bootloader, making it compatible with the "Arduino Uno" board setting in the Arduino IDE. It's worth noting that the Qwiic OpenLog draws approximately 2mA-6mA in idle mode, but during a full record, the OpenLog can draw 20mA to 23mA, depending on the microSD card being used.

The Qwiic OpenLog also supports clock stretching, which means it performs even better than the original and will record data up to 20,000 bytes per second at 400kHz. As the receive buffer fills up, this OpenLog will hold the clock line, letting the master know that it is busy. Once the Qwiic OpenLog is finished with a task, it releases the clock thus allowing the data to continue flowing without corruption.

The SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog supports 64MB to 32GB microSD cards in both FAT16 and FAT32 formats. The I2C address of the OpenLog is 0x2A and is jumper selectable to 0x29. A multiplexer/Mux is required to communicate to multiple OpenLog sensors on a single bus. If you need to use more than one OpenLog sensor, consider using the Qwiic Mux Breakout.

The SparkFun Qwiic Connect System is an ecosystem of I2C sensors, actuators, shields and cables that make prototyping faster and less prone to error. All Qwiic-enabled boards use a common 1mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector. This reduces the amount of required PCB space, and polarized connections mean you can’t hook it up wrong.

Get started with the SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog with the help of the SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog Guide. The Qwiic OpenLog library is also available for installation, providing several examples to help you understand its usage and capabilities.

The SparkFun Qwiic OpenLog boasts several features including continuous data logging at 20,000 bytes per second without corruption, compatibility with high speed 400kHz I2C, compatibility with 64MB to 32GB microSD cards (FAT16 or FAT32), preloaded Uno bootloader for easy firmware upgrading, valid I2C Addresses: 0x08 to 0x77, and 2x Qwiic Connectors.
