The W5500 Ethernet Controller from WIZnet is a highly versatile TCP/IP embedded Ethernet controller. It uses SPI communication protocol, supporting up to eight independent sockets simultaneously. With a SPI interface operating at up to 80MHz, it ensures high-speed Ethernet communication. The chip also includes a Wake on Lan (WOL) operation and a power down mode, contributing to efficient power usage.
The SparkFun MicroMod Ethernet Function Board uses an Ag9900m Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) DC/DC converter module. This module powers MicroMod assemblies from a PoE source such as a router or network switch. It supplies 9 Watts @5V to connected devices, configuring the PoE supply voltage to the IEEE802.3af Alternate B power scheme. This scheme uses the spare pairs in the Ethernet cable (4,5 and 7,8) for positive and negative DC voltage, effectively isolating power delivery from the data lines.
Thanks to the MicroMod standardization, the process of integrating the function board into your project is simplified. There is no need for cross-referencing schematics with datasheets or dealing with jumper wires. Simply align the function board's M.2 edge connector with the slot of the M.2 connector on the main board and secure it with screws.
