SparkFun FTDI Starter Kit - 5V

The SparkFun 5V FTDI Starter Kit is an essential tool for getting started with the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC. It features a board with a pinout that matches the FTDI cable standard, making it compatible with both official and cloned 5V Arduino boards. This kit is also suitable for general serial applications. The standout feature of this board is the DTR pin, which replaces the RTS pin found on the FTDI cable. This DTR pin enables an Arduino target to auto-reset when a new sketch is downloaded, eliminating the need to manually hit the reset button. This board can auto-reset any Arduino board that has the reset pin brought out to a 6-pin connector.

The SparkFun FTDI Basic Breakout, included in this kit, was engineered to reduce the cost of Arduino development and enhance ease of use. The auto-reset feature is a significant advantage. Arduino Pro and LilyPad boards are known to utilize this type of connector.
