The STA540 is a 4-channel, class AB audio amplifier from STMicro, designed specifically for high-quality sound applications. This versatile amplifier is perfect for a variety of projects, whether you're planning to set up a four-speaker stereo or a two-speaker bridge solution. The chip can handle a voltage supply from 8 to 22VDC and is known for its high output power capability.
The STA540 is housed in a staggered-lead Multiwatt-15 package. Although Sparkfun's breakout board for the L298N is not specifically designed for it, it can successfully breakout all pins of the STA540 to a more standard single row of 2.54mm pitch headers. Sparkfun is also planning to launch new amplifier products based on the STA540, so stay tuned!
The STA540 pairs excellently with the 6400BG Heatsink, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
Key features of the STA540 include high output power capability and a standby function that's CMOS compatible. It requires minimal external components, with no need for bootstrap capacitors or Boucherot cells, and an internally fixed gain of 20 dB. The chip is designed to prevent any audible pop during standby operations. It also comes with a range of diagnostic facilities, including a clip detector, output to GND short-circuit detector, output to VS short-circuit detector, soft short-circuit check at turn-on, and thermal shutdown warning. The output AC/DC short circuit protection, soft short-circuit check at turn-on, and thermal cutoff/limiter all work together to prevent the chip from overheating.
