PIR sensors are unique in that they do not provide specific distance data. Instead, they monitor for infrared light radiating from objects within their field of view. When they detect motion within their sensing area, they activate their signal. This makes them perfect for applications like automated device activation upon motion detection. They are widely used in home and building automation for energy conservation, automated on/off lighting control, security, appliances, and IoT.
The PIR motion sensors from Panasonic are low-profile (10.9mm compared to the standard 14.4mm height), offering space efficiency for constrained designs. The sensor comprises a lens for creating various detection zones, an optical filter for blocking non-infrared light, pyroelectric sensing elements, electromagnetic shielding for all circuitry, and an impedance converter for obtaining an electrical signal. The sensor provides a digital output across 32 zones with a detection distance of 5m and a 90° x 90° detection area.
The kit also includes a SparkFun RedBoard Qwiic to power your PIR sensor. The RedBoard Qwiic can be programmed via a USB Micro-B cable (included) using the Arduino IDE. Simply plug in the board, select "Arduino UNO" from the board menu, and you're ready to upload code. A 100mm Qwiic cable is included in the kit to connect your PIR sensor to your RedBoard.
Note: The sensitivity of passive infrared sensors can be affected by environmental conditions. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a performance evaluation test under representative conditions.
The SparkFun Qwiic Connect System is a comprehensive ecosystem of I²C sensors, actuators, shields, and cables that simplifies prototyping and reduces the likelihood of errors. All Qwiic-enabled boards use a common 1mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector, which minimizes the required PCB space. The polarized connections ensure you can't connect it incorrectly.
