Shift Register 8-Bit - SN74HC595

The SN74HC595N is an 8-bit shift register IC. This compact device enables the addition of extra inputs or outputs to a microcontroller by transposing data between parallel and serial formats. It communicates with your selected microcontroller using serial information, then collects or outputs information in a parallel (multi-pin) format. In simpler terms, it takes 8 bits from the serial input and then outputs them to 8 pins.
